Ninety-Five Players Progress to Day Two of Sold-Out Event
Dario MinieriThe PokerStars.com European Poker Tour San Remo attracted a sell-out field of 337 players on day 1A yesterday, and with day 1B expected to be even bigger, the EPT’s first stop in Italy could hardly be more successful.
However, only 95 players progressed from the starting field in this €5,000 buy-in event, which was initially expected to see only 500 players. The event sold out and was expanded to cope with an expected 700 players.
Team PokerStars pros were out in force, but Katja Thater was out early. Having doubled up with a set in level one, she drifted from the pace and busted a few levels into the tournament.
Dario Minieri, playing on home soil, had a typical rollercoaster ride through the day; at one point he was down to 3,000 in chips only to grow that to 30,000 within a few hands. Later, he ran his kings into former Card Player European Bureau Chief Rolf Slotboom’s aces. This proved nearly fatal, but, miraculously, he rebounded to finish the day on 28,200 in chips.
Fellow countryman Luca Pagano, who helped organise the event, had a fine session, growing his 10,000 in chips steadily to 55,000 before finishing the day on a comfortable 45,000. Patrik Antonius was not so fortunate when he ran his K-7 into K-9, which hit on both the turn and the river.
Pascal Perrault, Daan Ruiter, Liz Lieu, Roland De Wolfe, and Mark Teltscher all return for day 2.
The top 10 in chips at the end of day 1A are:
1. Ville Nyman (Finland) — 107,100
2. Henrik Brockmann (Germany) — 100,100
3. Yung Hwang (US) — 96,000
4. Hakan Sahl (Finland) — 93,700
5. Jean-Cleaude Perrot (France) — 72,700
6. Anthony Spinella (US) — 71,600
7. Eero Kekäläinen (Finland) — 70,000
8. Roberto Masullo (Italy) — 66,200
9. Isaac Baron (US) — 62,700
10. Dag Palovic (Slovakia) — 59,200
