OMG it's nice to make $400k
By Christopher Hunt
Big swings come with the territory in high-stakes poker, and Phil "OMGClayAiken" Galfond has definitely had his share of brutal days at the tables.
Occasionally dropping a few buy-ins in a session is somewhat expected, but at the highest stakes, those buy-ins can add up to a pretty daunting number - $400,000, $500,000 some days.
And even if your bankroll can handle it, it's got to be a fairly overwhelming feeling when you drop that kind of coin in a short period of time.
That being said, when the wheels of fortune turn the other way and you walk away with a half-million in just a few hours, the feeling is likely just as potent.
So after a pretty tumultous end of the year in 2007 - including a couple of $600k and $400k downswings wrapped around a $1.3 million upswing - it's got to be pretty satisfying for Galfond to break through with another big haul.
The cards delivered in a big way yesterday, with a couple of sessions of $300/$600 No-Limit Hold'em adding a sweet $400k (according to highstakesdb.com) to his bankroll - the bulk of it at the expense of high-stakes regulars "present" and Ilari "Ziigmund" Sahamies.
The biggest pot he dragged - for $145,182.50 - came against present, when his flopped set of Aces held against present's turned two pair.
This is how the hand played out, as tracked in the PokerListings.com MarketPulse section:
