Many times people bock when it comes to playing poker because it involves mathematics to figure out such things as hand odds. Well the process for determining such odds are not as complex as most believe them to be. The last thing that a poker player wants to do is pull out his trusty old hand odds chart and announce to the rest of the table "ROOKIE!!!"
There is a process by which one can determine hand odds without having a calculator...a degree in mathematics, or a hand odds chart! And it's so simple...even a poker player can do it!
The process is simple...what you do is count your outs after the flop, and either multiply times two plus one for the turn or times four for both the turn and the river.
For example: Let's say that you're a donk and decide to call and 4d for a starting hand. the flop comes 5c, 6d, Ad. OK...we know two things at this point...You'd be working on a flush...that gives you 9 outs, correct?....Good...You're also working on an inside straight draw, that gives you 4 more outs, correct?...Good.... Now add your total outs together... 9 plus 4 = 13 total outs. To get the percentage of hand odds of hiiting on the turn, the river or both is calculated as follows:
13 times 2 =26 plus one =27. The approximate odds of hitting one of your needed cards on the turn is 27%.
For the river, you simply do the above equation, but instaed of adding just one...you add two.
For calculating both the turn and the river....Multiply by 4...don't add anything alse. That will give you the approximtae odds of getting the card you need... 13 times 4 =52%...You are looking at a 52% or 2.1 to 1 ratio of hitting your card on either the turn or the river.
To summarize this:
Calculate turn post flop: Outs times 2 plus 1 = your percentage
Calculate River post turn: Outs times 2 plus 2= your percentage
Calculate both turn and river post flop: Outs times 4=your percentage.
This is by far the easiest, most reliable method of calculating your hand odds that there is. It simply does not get any easier than this. Next time you're in a game...try doing this method and let me know how it works for you....It really does work, and it's as close to exact odds that you're gonna get without pulling out the chart or the calculator, or bringing your friend Poindexter the mathemetician!
