Poker is about deception. A poker player decieves when they bluff, when they bet, when they check, and raise...It's all about deception, period, amen! With that in mind, a player must never get pegged as a particular type of player who is so predictable that if a bet is made...everyone folds. Nor should a player get pegged as a bluffer because players will not respect raises or bets.
Have you ever been at a table and saw a person fold about every single hand? Sure...I have, and the first thing I think about when that person makes a bet is, "This one's holding like the feds!" How about being at a table where a person who has played at a ton of hands have their pocket Q's get called by half the table, and lose to A8 suited when an Ace comes on the flop...It happens and this is where Changing gears can benefit you as an unpredictable poker player...A master deceiver!
The reality is, we are all creature's of habit. We fall into patterns that are part of our "comfort zone" and in poker it's more significant than in any other part of life because other players WILL capitalize on those patterns.
Many professional poker player's advocate changing up their style in the middle of a game or sporadically throughout a tourney, so that no one will be able to get a solid read on their particular style. This is smart poker, there... Of course, I am not recommending that you go from tight to loose in such a dramatic fashion that it loses you your chip advantage. Rather, I am simply stating that you should make certain small adjustments to change things up. If you're the type of player who is tight aggressive, then maybe you can call in a few more risky spots with middle pair or something...And then show everyone what you did. Let them know that you took that risk. Other player's will see that you are more daring than you were initially...and you may induce a few more caller's on your next big hand...See? Or If you are a slight manic player...tighten up a few hands and wait for a bigger hand.
The bottom line here is to confuse the other player's at the table...Make their decisions more difficult. Remember, poker is about deception. The better you are at deceiving your opponent's the more difficult their read becomes. Smart Poker...That's what it is and you should give it a try. It will make an immense difference in your game!
