After reading some of the posts on the PPZ Forum I feel the most important issue I can address is “TILT”…I realize most of us play on Bodog and it is very Rare that you will receive a Bad Beat…In fact it is very Rare that you will receive a Bad Beat playing online poker but I would like to address it.
We all have Bad Beat stories…my worst was flopping Quad 8s and having someone going allin with a pair of Jacks and well you know the outcome.
But we all have lost with Pocket Aces and sometimes to Ax…and theyend up hitting Trips, a Straight or a Flush. Normally you push and they follow and when you turn them over you are a 80% favorite. Then when the next five cards come out, you watch your chips move over into the Fishes stack.
This can be devastating…it can put you into an emotional state of mind that can be catastrophic. How many times have you seen someone after a Bad Beat lose all there money and leave the table broke. Or within the next few hands find themselves out of the tournament. It has never happened to me but I have seen it…ok maybe a couple of times.
The primary reason that TILT occurs is from losing a Big Pot. We always remember the Bad Beats and Big Losses but we hardly ever remember the Big Wins and Lucky Draws. Poker is not a total skill game, Luck too is involved…If you take Luck out of the Equation I would never Lose…LOL…But it is part of the Game and always will be.
What does Tilt do?
Well when you go on Tilt, the way you play just doesn’t make sense. You bluff more you play hands you wouldn’t normally play, you raise more, call more and become more aggressive. Your emotions are playing the Game for you. The most important thing you can do is to recognize that you are on Tilt and stop it right then and there.
If you do not recognize this emotional state and stop it, you will be on the rail and watching the Fish that called your bet. Playing this way takes the odds out of your favor…You must keep the odds in your favor. That’s what Texas Holdem is all about, keeping the odds in your favor. The more you keep the odds in your favor the more you will win…Remember gains come slowly and losses come quickly.
I have read from some books take a deep breath and remember it is just part of the game. Who are they trying to fool…TILT just does not go away that fast. The best thing you can do, after losing half your stack, is to “Sit Out” or have a list of hands you will only play, AA, KK, QQ and AK. I watched Jennifer Harmon get up and leave the table after losing with a Fullhouse to a Straight Flush on the river. Yes it does happen in live games too.
You must regroup and do it before it is too late. I completely ignore the other players and play only the cards. If I feel it is too bad I put it on auto fold and leave the room. This separation is the only cure for Tilt…you must not play your regular game until your mind is in it’s proper perspective. If you do not…your money will vanish.
Remember Recognize Tilt
Do Not Deny It
Separate From The Game And Your Emotions
Play Only When You Are Thinking Clearly
Gains Come Slowly Losses Come Quickly
