Today I was at a table playing a sit and go and I witnessed a common mistake made by a rookie player.
There were four people in a hand (Myself Included). Two were short stacked, one had about 2100 in chips and I had 1850. The 2 short stacks were in the SB and BB respectively. The guy with 2100 was on the button and I was 2 before the button. I simply called with AKos, and the guy on the button called...This action put the SB and BB All In. The flop came and it was 4h, 6h and Qs. I checked and the guy on the button throws out a bet of 500. I quickly fold. All the cards are turned up. The guy on the button that pushed me out had 2h, 9h, and was on a flush draw!!! The SB and BB both had A5os, and won the hand. Had I stayed in, I would have won the hand, and taken both those short stacks out.
So, who made the mistake??? The guy on the button should have checked down the hand to me. Why you ask? Because it increased the odds of taking 2 of the players OUT! Instead...he doubled them both up keeping them in the game. Now, instead of narrowing the field...He gave them enough chips to get back in contention.
It is crucial...unless you have the NUTS...to checkdown your hand when there is one or more short stack all ins at a table. This is especially so when you are playing a sit and go. That check down increases the odds of taking out the all in(s). It is imperative....crucial....ultimately important that you never ever EVER bluff when there is an all in or more than one all in on a table. It is completely illogical, and a rookie play and mistake. This is common knowledge amongst most player's...a kind of unwritten rule if you will, and is also proper poker ettiquete.
