Hey all,
just wanted to write a little about Feeler bets. With my game, i've come to look at poker as having two major sides... Winning and Loosing (haha). You're probably thinking, "no nuts, dumbass"...but a lot of times, people are only thinking about how they can beat everyone else. Very rarely are there strategies that work on not loosing as much as you might.
Feeler bets are my way of "not loosing as much as i might..". When i first started, i would slow play hands and sometimes win big. but the times i remember most, are when i'd slow play a good hand and loose big on the turn or river. so, i stopped slow playing (for the most part). I replaced that action with Feeler bets...so that i force a slow player to show me what they have early on. if the blinds are $30, and i have a decent hand, i would bet $100 or so pre-flop. Anyone who's got a decent hand will call...most will fold, and the monsters will usually show themselves by quickly calling, or raising. this does two things...1)gives me some sort of tell on my opponents, 2)keeps out the players who might have garbage pockets and catch a monster on the flop. Who's gonna stay in with 3 5 faced with a bet 3x or 4x the blinds?
If i bet $100, and someone quickly calls, i watch out. If someone raises, i back off, and possibly fold. My reasoning is that i feel i would have lost more in the long run trying to figure out what they had on the flop, turn, or river (which would give them plenty of time to build a great bluff, or catch the nuts)...than tossing that 100 away early on. Just play premium hands with this method.
Feeler bets also set you up with a good start to a bluff. "he bet strong pre-flop...must have something"...flop comes...they act weak...you place another bigger feeler bet. Not too big...just enough so they think you might be trapping them. They fold. you take down a pot you normally wouldn't have won if 2 other people stayed in to see it. (if they raise, run like hell
I typed this while trying to play a game..so if it doesn't make sense, i'm sorry
hope it helps someone though.
Oh yeah...and when you're playing against me...always play 2 7 whenever you get a chance (lol...jk)
cheers!
