This is my own personal supplement to the previous post of Online Poker Tells. Here are my own thoughts on what I perceive as Online Poker Tells.
For me, the biggest difference between Live brick and mortar tourneys and Online Poker tourneys is the lack of physical tells. However, there are some tells that one can extract from Online poker players during game action.
Betting: The amount that someone bets CAN be a tell if it is out of line with how they ordinarily bet at a pot. If the player had been an extremely tight player who takes very few risks and is suddenly jumping at a pot with a third of his stack, then you could perceive that as a tell that their hand may be VERY strong, and you would play your hand as such. Conversely, if a player whois ordinarily a loose player and is slow playing a pot all the sudden, that could be perceived as indicative of a strong hand.
Also raising and reraising can indicate the value of a hand. Pre flop reraising is VERY indicative of a high pocket pair...Sometimes, but not always. Generally, I watch the patterns of a player BEFORE I make a determination which is why it is so important to WATCH everyone closely. Pay attention!
Time To Act: How long a player takes to act can SOMETIMES indicate the value of their hand. Generally, if I bluff at a pot when their is three suited card on the community, if the player bets right back or calls quickly, then it is time to reassess your hand. If a player takes a long time to act, that, too could be indicative of a strong hand if a solid player is doing so. If a weak player is taking a while, I generally take that as a weak hand. Remember...Solid player, strong hand...Weak player...weak hand!
Stack Size: This is tricky, but I have found that most small stacks will take a stab at the pot with less than solid hands. I try not to call All In's from a short stack UNLESS I have 3 to 4 times the stack that they have or more. Conversely, I generally have witnessed that monster stacks play less than solid hands. Where does that leave us...Right down the middle with mid stacks. The mid stacks are generally the ones who will only stab at the pot with monsters. Adjust accordingly.
More to come!
