Sometimes I wonder why people show their hands...Are they doing it for the right reasons? Often times I think not. So what are the RIGHT reasons to show a hand or not show a hand.
Let me start off by telling you the wrong reason to show a hand. You don't show a hand for your ego...You can credit luck for dealing the cards to you. You just happend to be sitting in the right spot at the right time. So, don't be so quick to pat yourself on the back for procuring pocket Aces...
The true reason, and the MOST logical reason to EVER show your hand is to set up FUTURE hands. What you are attempting to do is set up an opponent in a later showdown, so that you place doubt in their mind, and you do that by either showing a great hand(s) that you have had to tight players, or poor cards to set up loose players. "That" is smart poker.
It's strictly psychological, and the better you set up these future hands the more you will get into your opponents head, which is exactly where you want to be. By showing hands in key spots, you may be able to confuse your opponent. Sometimes I'll show a GREAT hand and a few hands later I'll show a bluff...What am I attempting to do? I am attempting to confuse my opponent, so that they won't know whether or not to call me. Other times I will show poor hands in an attempt to induce a call in a later round. Or I'll show a GREAT hand so that people will respect my raises.
Other times, it is important NOT to show...Why, you ask? Because everytime you show, that is additional information that your opponent can use against you. I make it a strict policy NOT to show UNLESS there is a reason why I do.
So many times I have seen people show there hands to other players only to be busted out later because people have been able to pick up on betting patterns associated with the cards that people have shown for their ego's sake...It's just not a good idea.
Unless there is a specific purpose to why you want to show your hand after taking down a pot, then my suggestion to you is to keep them guessing and muck that hand!
