Often I see many players get trapped in a hand after having called with a Mid Kicker, but a solid Face card. For instance, KTs isn't a bad hand to call form late position, but it certainly is a hand that MUST be played cautiously, because those players before you, if they are indeed smart players, will only enter the hand with better cards than your KTs.
This particular hand is especially dangerous when you have paired your face card and are calling bets from an early psition bettor. The danger exists because you are more than likely faced with a player who has also paired top card, but has a better kicker than you, and unless you pair your kicker as well, then you really have no business in the hand calling bets that are surely in vain.
Here's the deal...You are playing with 2 cards pre-flop. Those starting hands need to be in line with your position at the table. If you happen to be in early position, clearly, you need to have better cards than you would from late position to call, right? It is THIS premise that you must tread lightly when entering a hand from either mid to late positions with a high value face card with a mid valued kicker.
A good idea, is to see the flop only, and if there is no betting, make a probe bet...If you are called, be careful. If you are raised, drop the hand, it's a dog.
The other consideration is who you are playing against. You definitley must know who your opponents are to make a clear decision. If your opponent is the type to bet at anything, then you may want to go a little further, but against a solid player, you must know that you are beaten and lay that hand down.
