One day, far out in the woods, there was a heads up NLH poker match between a turtle and a hare. The turtle, playing his normal solid game, sat back patiently waiting for good solid hands to play. The hare, on the other hand, played any 2 cards, raising and reraising to steal the pots.
The blinds continued to rise, and the hare amassed a hefty stack of chips, while the turtle bided his time patiently waiting for a mistake by the hare.
The match continued well into the night and the hare, feeling like he had this game in the bag, continued to bully the turtle. The turtle, still patiently biding his time chuckled to himself how reckless the hare was becoming.
The blinds, having finally risen to the point where they actually made a difference, were at the 150/300 range, and the turtle knew that it was just about time to make his stand.
The next hand was dealt out, and the turtle peeks at his hand to see pocket rockets. He raised 3 times the BB, and the Hare, as confident as ever laughed and splashed the pot with what he considered to be such a paultry amount. The flop came and it was A, A, K! The turtle, not flinching even a bit, pondered his next move..."I bet $1,000, said the turtle. Boldly, the hare snapped back, "I raise $3,000", with a grin. The turtle simply called hoping to suck the hare in.
The turn came and it was a 10. The turtle, positioning to lay his trap, simply checked. The hare, brimming with confidence chuckled, and said, "All In!" The turtle, knowing that he had the nuts, called.
The hare turned over his hand, a pair of K's..."Full boat!", he bellowed. The turtle turned over his aces, and said, "Four bullets..." The hare, writhed slightly, his whiskers twitching, and he screamed..."You didn't even bet the turn...that was a bad play, but I still have plently of chips, so we'll see who wins this round!"
The turtle deals out the cards and then peeked again at his hole cards. They were pocket Q's. The hare looks down at his hole cards and saw pocket J's. "All In", said the Hare, brimming with confidence! The turtle called. The community cards were dealt and the turtles Q's held up.
"Argggghhhh!" cried the hare, "I have been playing this game all day and night with you and you take all my chips in 2 hands...That's cheating!" The turtle smiled at the hare and said, "while you have been playing all of those junk cards, I have been waiting for just the right cards to take your entire stack...You have been playing into me this entire game."
The turtle piled up his winnings and headed for home, and the hare scratched his head and wonders how he is going to explain to his wife how he lost all of his carrots in a poker game...
The moral of this story: It only takes 1 or 2 hands to change an entire game for you. If you sit back, be patient, wait for the right hands and push those hands you KNOW you have your opponent beat on then it won't matter one bit who had the most chips throughout the game! Those chips that you had turned over in the early rounds can easily come back if you play your cards RIGHT! Patience is the key to victory!
