When I first began playing poker, I remember going up against an ultra-aggressive opponent and thinking that the guy was a few eggs short of a dozen. I soon came to realize that this guy had a very distinct method to his madness and that his aggressive betting was paying off dividends I only wished I could accumulate on my own.
Aggression in poker is crucial because it throws people off track. While many are sitting at the table calling and checking like crazy, the aggressive player opts to make people make decisions that they just don't want to have to make. Truly, it is what makes a poker player a gambler to some degree because the aggressive player makes the passive player put his money where his mouth is.
Aggression can be used as a tool to bully a table into submission. Often times, players will steer completely away from the aggressive player because they know that at any given time the aggressive player may make the passive player gamble his entire stack on ONE hand, and most players don't want to take that risk...so they just avoid it altogether. Thi sets up the aggressive player in a position to steal blinds.
The importance of aggression cannot be overlooked, but it is equally important to use your aggression at key times and at key spots, so that you don't get played into someones trap. Don't make the mistake of being set up.
Over the next few games you play, watch closely at those people who are aggressive and pay particular attention at HOW they use the aggression to their advantage. You'll notice that the aggressive player reeps far more reward than does the passive player.
