Many a poker player will often tell you to "play the player"...and for all intents and purposes, that is sound advice especially when it comes to brick and mortar play. However, online poker is an altogether different horse, and while the same advice holds true, there is another element that OFTEN goes unnoticed.
Online poker utilizes software that is, by its very nature, is encoded with very non-random, sequential patterns. Yes, it's true, and if you don't believe me, sit back and watch how often certain hands play out...It's almost as if you can predict the next card to come. Sometimes I'll find myself doing that very thing; guessing the next card to come...and more often than not, I find that I can predict that next card. A miracle? Nah...just common sense...and having seen the same predicatble pattern played out dozens of time the same old way!!!
So, with the above information, I think that your next step should be learning the subtle nuances of whatever poker site you play on, and capitalize on them.
For instance: I personally have found that when I play on Bodog, if I am holding a pair of 2's in the pocket, I rarely will catch my 3rd 2 on the flop, but I DO catch on the turn. And the same holds true for 3's.
Also, I have found that if I am holding AK in the pocket on Bodog, I can expect to catch either an A or a K almost 47% of the time (slightly higher odds than live games).
And how about short stacks...Has anyone noticed that the short stack seems to win a showdown almost 84% of the time??? It's all software patterns that I have noticed and picked up on while playing on Bodog! These are patterns that Bodog's software seems to utilize.
Paying close attention to these subtle nuances will greatly enhance your game strategy and increase your odds of winning...And it should make perfect sense to you, because computer software programs are written. What's more, they are written by people, and as infalliable as poker sites would like to lead you to believe that they are, the harsh reality is there is holes that CAN and WILL be exposed, and if you aren't the one who is willing to take the time to expose them, then someone...perhaps your opponent, will!
My advise to you...Take a weekend when you really have nothing better to do, and watch with great interest and pen in hand...and watch the patterns of all pocket pairs, and some of the larger hands like AK and AQ and see how they play out. Then the following day...see if there is a pattern that is recognizable and key in on those factors. Also, pay attention to the things that I wrote about above, and see if what I am saying is not true most of the time; Partcularly when it comes to the short stack and their overwhelming amount of wins. Often times, I will make a fun side bet with players at a table and say, "I'll bet you 10 to 1 the short stack takes this"...and when he does, they all ask how I am privy to this information...Well, really I am not, but it sure gives them something to talk about, ya know?
All software, no matter whether it's poker, or some other type of game, they all have a pattern no matter how slight, although not readily visble over a short period, it can be detected over a long period of time. Do your homework and YOU be the one who capitalizes on those patterns.
As scary as this premise may be for some people to fathom, it is an undeniable fact. And don't just take MY word for it...read up on gaming software and programming. You will find, as did I, that software is very predictable and if you are diligent enough, you can spot the subtleties more and more.
Your input on patterns that you have seen would be most helpful. The more sulbtle patterns that we can compile, the better chance we have at being more effective when competing. And what the heck...better us than the other guy, right?
