Only a Handful of Events Left to Accumulate Points for Top-Ranked Players
David PhamThe calendar page just flipped to December, and players in contention for the Card Player Player of the Year (POY) race have only one month left to accumulate points. The competition is in its final stretch and, with a few big events left awarding elusive POY points, there is still time to steal David Pham’s No. 1 spot.
The Bellagio Five-Diamond World Poker Classic is under way with every event qualifying for POY points. The main event of the series is the World Poker Tour Doyle Brunson Classic Championship on Dec. 12. Current POY runner-up Jonathan Little has an incredible WPT track record for this year with three televised final-table finishes, including a title win at the Mirage Poker Showdown. Another player in the POY top 10 who has similar WPT results is J.C. Tran. Currently in sixth place, Tran has also made three championship final tables with a win at the World Poker Challenge in Reno. The Five-Diamond will be last opportunity at a fourth WPT final table this year for these two players.Jonathan Little
Another title up for grabs this month that will award POY points is the World Series of Poker Circuit event at Harrah’s Atlantic City. The prelims begin Dec. 8 and lead up to the $5,150 buy-in no-limit championship on Dec. 16. All events are giving away POY points. This may be where East Coast player and holder of the No. 7 spot, David Fox, of Coram, New York, will play to boost his standings.
Vegas residents such as Bill Edler (fourth), James Van Alstyne (eighth), and Jared Hamby (ninth) can make the short trip to Reno, Nevada, where the Winter Pot of Gold tournament series is taking place. The Grand Sierra Resort and Casino is hosting tScott Clementshe events, beginning on Dec. 7 with a $330 buy-in no-limit hold'em tournament. This is one of the seven events scheduled to award POY points, including the $540 buy-in championship on Dec. 16.
Players looking for more POY points can also take a trip overseas to the European Poker Tour stop in Prague. The main event is a $6,900 buy-in no-limit hold'em tournament on Dec. 10 at the Hilton Hotel. This might be an opportunity for players who do not live in an area where the large tournaments are taking place, -- people like Tom Schneider (fifth) of Phoenix, Arizona, and Scott Clements (third) of Mount Vernon, Washington -- to earn some much-needed points.
